Medical Internship in Palampur

Live the life of a local doctor or nurse in the beautiful green landscape of Palampur, in the north of India.  Day to day you will shadow fully qualified doctors/nurses and intern in a variety of different departments.  This internship will give you a true insight into how the healthcare system works in India.

You can add our highly-recommended, week-long cultural and language orientation in Delhi and Agra, home of the Taj Mahal for some amazing sightseeing (more details below).

Our medical internship in northern India is designed for people not yet studying medicine but have a keen interest in the subject so it’s a perfect placement if you are considering a career in medicine and want to find out if it's for you!

Palampur is a rural setting, surrounded by rice fields and tea plantations, it is completely different to the hustle and bustle of Delhi.

As an intern, you will learn how to carry out different medical procedures and you will get first-hand experience of what it is like to be a doctor or nurse in India.  You will work with a number of health institutions in Palampur, including hospitals, nursing homes, physio centres, dental clinics and centres that provide alternative and traditional forms of medicine.

Whether you are considering a medical, nursing or physiotherapy course at university, or you're a current student, this programme is the perfect way to gain medical work experience. This will look great on your CV and help you to stand out from others as well as allowing you to create memories that will last a lifetime.

On this internship you will learn from medical professionals, all of whom are keen to work with you and pass on their knowledge in this field. You can expect to work alongside staff from various departments each day, meaning you will get to see variety of medical procedures. Interns can work in numerous departments, including:

  • In-patients wards
  • Pharmacy
  • Radiology/Imaging
  • Occupational therapy
  • General wards
  • Nursing
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Physiotherapy
  • Internal medicine
  • General surgery

If you wish to specialise in a particular department please let us know.

Interns should expect to work 5 days a week, between 9.30am and 2pm.  At 2pm, interns can head back to their accommodation for lunch and free time. There are yoga classes on the rooftop of the house and a number of tours you can enjoy in the afternoons.

What experience do I need?

The programme is ideal for people who have studied or are considering studying medicine, nursing or physiotherapy.

Interns should be flexible, enthusiastic and have a good work ethic. In return, you will gain a valuable experience that will help in your future medical career.

Accommodation and food

  • Interns live in a purpose built volunteer house just outside Palampur
  • In the house there will be up to 20 volunteers at any one time so you should expect to share a room with three other people
  • Each room is en-suite with western style toilet, hot water and shower
  • There is WiFi access but it is not reliable (we recommend getting a local SIM card with a data allowance in India)
  • There is a yoga class held on the roof of the accommodation so you have the chance to unwind and relax with a stunning view of the Himalayas
  • Badminton court in front of the accommodation, which you can use
  • The house is a 15 minute walk from the main road (where you can catch the bus into town)
  • You will be cooked 3 meals a day, seven days a week, so you’ll experience real Indian cooking

Language and Cultural week

In preparation for your intern programme, we recommend taking part in our optional language and cultural weekin Delhi for an additional £415.

The language and cultural week provides an opportunity to relax, find your feet, recover from the journey and learn lots about your new home. We provide Hindi lessons, including key words and phrases that you will find useful when you arrive in Palampur.

The programme starts on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month and takes place the week before you head to Palampur to begin your medical internship.
